Mental Health in Fire Services - Article in Blaulicht Magazine

by Isabel Anger

Emergency responders are regularly exposed to extraordinary and stressful situations, especially in fire service operations. But how do these experiences affect mental health? And what helps to stay healthy and mission-ready in the long run?

In the current issue of the magazine Blaulicht, Dietmar Kratzer and Barbara Juen (University of Innsbruck and DCNA Public Health expert group) examine the psychological stress on firefighters and show which protective factors and support services are necessary to remain operational in the long term.

Their article highlights how firefighters are particularly exposed due to physical strain, long durations, risk to their own safety, and emotional proximity to those affected. Even though emergency personnel tend to be more resilient than the general population, cumulative stress can build up over time, potentially leading to psychological stress reactions and illnesses.

In addition to training, peer support and rest, psychosocial support structures are key: debriefings, low-threshold peer systems, and a leadership culture that encourages open conversations can all contribute to maintaining mental health and operational readiness.
